The North Carolina AHEC in conjunction with its Health Careers and Workforce Diversity Council will host its 13th annual Future Leaders in Healthcare Conference at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in Charlotte, NC. This conference is for 9th-12th grade students who are interested in a career in healthcare. The conference will introduce students to healthcare professionals, college and university representatives, an array of workshops and speakers and extra-curricular activities designed with students in mind. Camp FOCUS
Rising 7th and 8th Graders

Camp FOCUS will be an opportunity for students to observe, question, hypothesize, test, and defend their ideas about science and the world around them. Rising seventh graders will focus on topics from the 7th grade NCSCOS including; science safety, force and motion, heredity, flight, water quality, and various health science topics. A Health Fair will be held in the media center and these students will also go on a field trip to the Washington Esturaium. The rising eighth graders will focus on topics from the 8th grade NCSCOS including; science safety, forensics, microbiology, cell theory, chemistry, and DNA extraction. A trip to DSM with access to the micro and chem labs is planned.
Destination Health Careers

Destination Health Careers will expose students to a variety of associate degree health care careers available to them at Pitt Community College. These careers include respiratory therapy, medical sonography, radiologic technology, occupational therapy assisting, polysomnography, and medical assisting. The students will be engaged in two days of hands-on education in a high tech laboratory setting at Pitt Community College, one and one-half days of job shadowing experiences with experienced health care professionals at Vidant Medical Center, and the final afternoon in the simulation laboratory at ECU Brody School of Medicine.

SHOTS Students Hot on the Sciences
Co-sponsored by the North Carolina A&T State University Department of Biology is a six-week enrichment program for high school juniors and seniors. This program provides quality science instruction with hands-on, discovery-based research training and career enrichment that will give students a competitive edge for successfully matriculating through college. Students are engaged in rigorous academic courses and exposed to genetic research.

UNCG Middle College Summer Camp
This program is for rising ninth grade students who is interested in attending the Guilford County Middle College Health & Sciences at UNCG. This program will help students transition from middle school to high school, improve math and science skills, and prepare for the next grade level. Students will be introduced to health careers and complete health related site visits.
The program will conduct two sessions tentatively scheduled for the week July 9–13 and July 16-20
Science and Technology Enrichment Program (STEP)
STEP is co-sponsored by the North Carolina A&T State University Department of Chemistry. The primary goal for S.T.E.P. is to give students in grades 10-12 an introductory "minds-on" and "hands-on" experience in a variety of science based subjects that include analytical, organic, biochemistry, biotechnology and nanotechnology with an emphasis on their application to the pharmaceutical sciences. The program will also include activities such as tutorials, mentoring, field trips opportunities to participate in science related research seminars.

MAHEC/WCU Health Careers Summer Camp
Middle school minority & economically disadvantaged students
June 17-23, 2012
Students will live on the campus of Western Carolina University (WCU) and will begin their camp experience with team building and group dynamics exercises at the Moonshadow Ropes Course in the beautiful mountains of Whittier, NC. Camp sessions cover a variety of topics including nutrition, diversity, pharmacotherapy, healthy life styles and peer influence, nursing, and emergency medical services. Campers will receive information about academic preparation required in middle and high school to enter a health career. Students also leave camp CPR or First Aid certified. Other activities include swimming, bowling, self-awareness activities, and white water rafting. The week ends with a Friday night talent show, drumming class and a family style breakfast and certificate ceremony on Saturday morning. The camp creates an environment that fosters optimism about the value, rewards, and accessibility of careers in healthcare.

Project SEARCH

This program is designed to recruit, educate, prepare and enhance the academic qualifications of rising eighth grade students for careers in the health professions. Students will spend one week in residence on the campus of Wake Forest University and will have daily exposure to the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Activities include health career presentations, tours, and observations.

Club Med-Isaac Bear Early College

Club Med is a week long program that offers an in depth look at health careers, college preparedness, and hot topics in health care. Students have an opportunity to travel to Duke University Medical Center and the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University to speak with health care professionals and become familiar with health-science programs of study. Students also shadow a professional in their career field of interest and must create a presentation on their experience.
Brunswick County MASH (Medical Academy of Science and Health) Camp
6-8 Grade

Middle School students from Brunswick County will receive instruction on health careers, health care delivery, and college preparedness during this unique program at Brunswick Novant Medical Center. Students will travel the hospital with a teddy bear given a particular ailment. The students must take the teddy bear to the appropriate department of the hospital to get treatment for the teddy bear and have series of questions about the profession answered. Departments visited by the students include the emergency room, radiology, clinical lab, physical therapy, and pharmacy.
Pender County Health Careers Exploration Camp

Students will have an opportunity to discover a variety of health care careers by following the approved “Exploring the Health Professions curriculum.” Students will engage in exciting activities including blood typing, urine analysis, fetal pig dissections, and more. Students will also get a chance to travel to the Biotechnology Training Center at NC State and the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

A health careers exploration camp intended for the Charity’s HOPE (Health Occupations and Professions Exploration) club from Charity Middle School. Students will receive a guided tour of Duplin General Hospital and receive college preparedness lessons from James-Sprunt Community College. In addition, they will travel to the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University to compare educational opportunities.

The Jr. Seahawk Summer Academy is an educational day program at UNCW designed for students interested in participating in a unique and creative look at math, science, and technology. Activities include exciting math, science, reading and technology explorations, as well as seminars and creative projects to be designed and presented by the students.

Students of the Youth Health Service Corps will explore health careers by touring the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, the Biotechnology Training Center at NC State, Brunswick Novant Medical Center, and other local health clinics. Exploration Station: On Track to a Heath Career

Wake AHEC offers a five-day health career exploration camp on the campus of WakeMed Health and Hospitals. Students will follow the story of Alex Healer and his exciting adventure as a patient at the hospital. Activities include meeting with various health professionals and learning about health careers as they tour hospital departments and participate in hands on stations. Topics covered will include: Emergency Services, Laboratory, Radiology, Rehabilitation, Surgery, Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, and others. *Parents please note that activities may include examples of suturing, various types of medical equipment and anatomy including sight and smell. Please be aware if your child is sensitive to this environment.
